We are excited to share that Mark Maxfield, CEO and Owner, of The Cottages Senior Living was elected on October, 4th, 2023 as the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) Chair of the Board of Directors for the 2023/2024 term. Phil Scalo of New Jersey was elected as the American Health Care Association (AHCA) Chair of the Board of Directors. This took place at the 2023 AHCA/NCAL Convention, held in Denver, Colorado.
The Remarks From Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL
Mark Parkinson, who is the AHCA/NCAL President and CEO, said, “We are thrilled to have Phil and Mark as the Chairs of our Boards. Their dedication to our sector and expertise will undoubtedly guide our organization to new heights in the coming year. Mark Maxfield’s Remarks As The Newly Elected NCAL Chair
The scene was inspiring as Mark Maxfield was sworn in by his wife, Mindy Maxfield. During the inauguration, he recited the oath of office and delivered an impactful speech to the attendees of the 2023 AHCA/NCAL Convention, as well as those who serve in the long-term care industry. His reciting of the oath and following remarks are as follows:
“I, Mark Maxfield, do solemnly swear to fulfill the duties of the office to which I have been elected to the best of my ability. In accordance with the constitution of the bylaws of the American Health Care Association, the National Center for Assisted Living, and the constitution of the United State of America, so help me God!
“It was a surreal experience to have my wife, Mindy Maxfield, swear me into office. We have been married 31 years and she has been my biggest supporter, even in times when I didn’t deserve it. It is my extreme honor to be the Chair of the NCAL Board of Directors, and I thank you for your support! As I looked across the convention room I saw my friends, colleagues, mentors, predecessors, and I remain so impressed with the quality of individuals that work in long-term care. What we do is hard, but it’s also rewarding. I want to thank my predecessor, Gerald Hamilton, for his excellent service and leadership as the former Chair of NCAL.
“It was about 10 years ago that I decided to throw my hat in the ring and run for a seat on the NCAL Board, and I had no idea what to expect. I recall the excitement and trepidation I had for my first visit to Washington, DC. It was there that I was able to see firsthand the ongoing advocacy efforts that are occurring on our behalf. I was also introduced to this really tall guy, Mark Parkinson, who was a former Governor from Kansas, and the CEO of AHCA/NCAL. Because of his visionary leadership, the AHCA/NCAL is the largest and most effective long-term care association in the country, with over 14,000 members.
“You may have elected me as NCAL Chair but know this, the real blood, sweat, tears and hard work that goes on with this association goes without fanfare and speeches, and is typically done by people behind closed doors. Those people are the very hardworking AHCA/NCAL staff. They are the best!
“Now, here’s my ask for all of you. Go and do what you do best. Lead your staff. Take care of your residents. Run your facilities and continue to be the rockstars that you are. Also, when the AHCA/NCAL reaches out to you and asks you to take a survey or asks for you to do something to help the industry, please take the time to do so. Working together, I promise that we can improve the lives of millions of people.
