Transitioning into Assisted Living can be difficult as one leaves behind what they have known for many years. Many mixed emotions can occur, and there may be thoughts of sadness or wondering if any more personal growth will happen. However, there is an abundance of opportunities for personal growth while living in senior living. Here are three tips to continue growing.
#1 Continue to Learn About Things That You’re Interested In
Continuing to learn about things we are interested in helps us mentally, socially, and emotionally. The great thing is that there are several ways to expand our knowledge. Technology is a powerful tool and provides individuals with many learning opportunities. An individual can utilize technology to:
- Listen to an audiobook
- Take an online course
- Watch educational videos
- Connect with others that are interested in similar topics through social media or online groups
- Listen to podcasts
Other ways that we can learn are by reading books and magazines, taking trips to the local library, or visiting other local places that are captivating. The important point is to keep learning and keep growing. It is never too late to increase your personal growth.
#2 Start a Hobby Club & Share Your Wisdom With Others
Chances are that if you’re interested in a subject matter, others might be too, or they might have something that they want to share with you. Start a group within your senior living community where individuals can share their talents, things that they are working on, or that they find intriguing. This allows each person to actively be involved in an activity that is of interest to them. A person may want to speak about a recent book that they have read, something that they built, show off the plants that they have grown, talk about classic cars, play a musical instrument, reminisce about places they have traveled, work they have done, or things that they have accomplished. Whatever it may be, there is a wealth of knowledge in our senior living communities and a lot can be learned and gained by sharing it with one another.
#3 Stay Involved In The Community
There are opportunities within our communities to share our talents with others. Individuals that reside in senior living communities have lived experiences that others can benefit from. Young adults can gain from these experiences and the wisdom that seniors have to share. Be willing to share your talents and experiences with others. If you work in a specific field, or you have a special talent or story that would enrich people’s lives, there are opportunities for you to share this with others. This can be done by getting involved with the:
- Local schools and colleges
- Local libraries
- Boy and Girls clubs
- Local churches
- Employment training offices
- Senior centers
Continued Growth Has Many Benefits
There are many ways to continue growing no matter what stage of life we are in. As we invest in ourselves we will see many benefits. Learning provides feelings of accomplishment and creates a sense of pride and confidence. It also helps us stay mentally alert and decreases the likelihood of depression, cognitive decline, or feeling like we are in a rut. So, take the opportunity today to find a way to enhance a current skill or learn a new one. You won’t regret it!
